In this fascinating Subject Spotlight, Jane Milton uncovers the power of documentary filmmaking. In episode one, Jane introduces the concept of documentary filmmaking, looking at the history of the genre and why documentaries are so popular today. Jane then goes on to outline the six main styles of documentary and how they are different. In episode two, Jane outlines how to craft a documentary. Jane notes the importance of preparation and research as well as some key considerations in the production stage of a project. In episode three, Jane discusses the importance of the interview process and offers insight into how you as a filmmaker can get the most out of your interview. Jane also discusses the style of questioning, location considerations, as well as some technical considerations like camera and sound. In the final episode, Jane sets you a task that encourages you to practise the art of the interview and use the knowledge gained throughout this Subject Spotlight by interviewing a member of your family!

Meet the academic
Jane Milton

Jane Milton is a senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University and an award-winning filmmaker, who has directed a BAFTA and a Grierson-winning documentary. Jane teaches on the Film Production BA (Hons) course. Jane’s background is in radio, film, and TV journalism. Alongside her teaching work, Jane partners with various film and TV productions in the industry to help her students in finding work opportunities. Jane also works with the course’s industry alumni who offer mentoring opportunities and practical advice. Currently, Film Production has partnerships with the British Film Institute (BFI), the Curzon cinema in Westgate and other collaborations for screenwriting competitions with Fresh Film and career talks with the Envy post-production house.
